Crash diets fail so often precisely because they ignore this. Push the gap too wide and the body starts fighting back with cravings and exhaustion.
Maintaining, or actually trying to gain
Maintaining weight sounds simple on paper: eat what you burn. But day-to-day activity fluctuates enough that it takes some real attention to stay steady.
Gaining weight, especially if you’re after muscle rather than just weight in general, flips the equation. A modest surplus, decent protein intake, and resistance training gets you there without piling on unnecessary fat. In any of these three scenarios, what you’re eating matters almost as much as how much. Vegetables, fruit, and lean protein make hitting your target a lot less miserable than white-knuckling through hunger.
Do men really burn more than women?
Broadly, yes. But it’s more nuanced than people make it out to be. Men typically carry more muscle and less fat, and since muscle costs more energy to maintain than fat does, that composition gap drives a real difference in baseline burn.
Sex alone doesn’t decide it, though. A muscular, active woman will out-burn a sedentary man of similar size without much trouble. Body composition and activity level end up mattering more than which box you tick on a form, once you’re comparing actual individuals instead of population averages. Hormones complicate things further too; shifts across a woman’s cycle can nudge metabolic rate around in ways no static formula accounts for.
The stuff that actually moves the needle long-term
If you’re trying to push your number up over time, chasing it through sheer willpower rarely works. Building it into habits does. Strength training is probably the most direct lever, since more muscle means higher resting energy needs all day, not just during the workout. Protein backs that up; skimp on it and you’re working against yourself even if the training is solid.
Sleep and stress get ignored way too often here. Bad sleep and chronic stress both mess with your hormones in ways that quietly work against fat loss, no matter how clean your diet looks on paper. Staying active throughout the whole day, not just during one workout block, compounds over weeks in a way one intense session a week just can’t replicate.
At some point I stopped chasing the exact number and started paying attention to the habits underneath it. The formulas are a decent starting point. They’re not the whole story. Your real number lives somewhere between the math and how you actually eat, move, sleep, and live. That gap is where the real work happens anyway.
